The photos from Sharleen were heartbreaking.

Lucky was badly broken.  Broken femur.  Luxated pelvis.  Badly, badly broken.  But thankfully the skilled surgeons at Gulf Coast were able to repair him.

After many weeks of recovery and rehab, Lucky was adopted into a fabulous home.

Thanks to one of our fabulous volunteers, Kathy, who contacted the adopters, we can share this amazing update….

Lucky Lawton, now known as Ben, is again living in Oklahoma with his new mommy Mary. Ben is the most cat-like dog you might ever meet. He enjoys sleeping, cuddling, but gets an extra burst of energy when it is time for his evening walk. Ben is truly a part of our family and we couldn’t imagine our lives without him.

Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue, its vets, and supporters perform the miracles. Miracles that enable broken dogs like Lawton to go on living the wonderful lives they were put on this earth to live.

The heartworm baby then grows and grows and grows, sometimes up to two feet long.  All the while, clogging the entrance into the heart more and more.  As the worms grow and clog the artery, blood flow slows down, the heart is forced to exert much more effort to beat and the heart begins to enlarge and lose some of it’s flexibility.  If not treated, a dog will eventually die of respiratory distress from these nasty creatures.

We have six little dogs that need heartworm treatment….

Inez Harris.  Well, you guessed it!  She’s not a shih tzu.  She’s a gorgeous little long-haired chihuahua.  We were at the shelter picking up another dog that had been surrendered with her.  The shelter folks said that no one wanted Inez because she was black and had heartworms.  So she was scheduled to die.  Well, we just scooped her up and stuck her in the car.  Yep.  And we’re glad we did.  She’s a doll baby.

Rowan Starling.  Absolutely stunning lhasa boy.  And a total sweetheart!  He was found as a stray and turned in to a south Texas shelter.  Simple heartworms precludes a dog from making it on the adoption list.  So his only way out was with us.  He needs a LOT more in his little piggy bank.

Dryfus Harris – wow this horrible hot mess came to us with a HUGE HUGE abscess on the right side of his neck – it was the size of a softball!!  We immediately rushed him to our vet who, thankfully, was able to save him from sepsis but it was touch and go for a while.  Now, he’s up for heartworm treatment.

Denae Harlingen!  Yet another one who was a HORRIBLE MESS.  Tiny, tiny, sweet little Denae took four months just to get healthy enough to handle heartworm treatment.  Her skin was badly infected and her eyes as dry as a bone.  Now, it’s time.  Heartworm treatment here she comes.

Tonka Harris – guess what?  Not a matted mess!!  Nope, but a story just as sad.  Tonka was left at a grooming shop and his owner refused to pick him back up.  He’s 12.  Can  you believe this?  Just a tubby little cutie pie.  Now he needs heartworm treatment.

The reason I am doing this fundraising campaign is because I would like to help Lone Star Shih Tzu & Lhasa Apso Rescue raise money to help with the costs associated with saving severely broken dogs that need a substantial amount of vetting/surgery. Without Lone Star, these dogs would be put to sleep without a being given the chance of a wonderful life. With some support, I will be able to raise a substantial amount of money for this wonderful rescue that I truly adore. Here is what I propose…….If you or your family, friends, or acquaintances mention Lone Star during our first interaction and use my services, I will donate 30% of my commissions back to Lone Star.
Rent an apartment in Houston, Dallas/Ft. Worth, San Antonio, and Austin areas: If I make 100% of 1 months commission on an apartment leasing at $1000/mth, $300 will go directly to Lone Star. Commission on apartments can be 0% (some apts do not pay agents) to 100%+. IMPORTANT……you MUST put my name on both the guest card and the lease as your referring agent and you MUST call me and tell me where you leased. The apartment complex will NOT call me and tell me that somebody put my name down as their locator.
Purchase (new or resale) or sell a home in the Greater Houston area: The standard commission rate per agent per deal is 3%. Buy or sell a home through me, I will give 30% of my 3% commission to Lone Star. For example: if you purchase or sell a $200,000 home through me, $1800 of my commission will go to Lone Star upon closing and funding.

I’m not sure why these stories constantly amaze me. Day after day, we get emails and messaages about badly injured dogs.

Chaos is one of those.

Horribly matted and with a disgusting smell coming from his mouth, Chaos’s jaw is just hanging. It’s badly broken and he needs surgery.

We’ve had him on antibiotics for a few weeks to get the infection under control and now he’s scheduled for surgery.

Little Thelan has been on her own for a long, long time.  Horribly matted – probably one of the top five matted dogs I’ve seen in 16 years – both eyes damaged beyond repair – just a total mess.  Not only does she look horrible physically, she has a huge heart murmur, so will be going to GCVS soon.

Good samaritan saw her wandering around and begged us to take her.

I was absolutely shocked when we picked up this little boy and saw the shape he was in.  He is painfully emaciated, and his hair was crusted with flea dirt.  I’ve NEVER seen so much flea dirt on a dog in my life.

You can help us save this pitiful boy.

As we cleaned him up, the tub ran red with blood!!  No, not fresh blood from a wound, old, dried flea excrement.  Fleas drink the blood of the dog and lay their waste in his coat.

Disgusting!
